These organic bowls are made by hand from Ankole cattle horns and are sourced from Uganda by Bobby Mickler and his wife, Downie. While working in East Africa in 2012 Bobby noticed an enormous pile of Ankole cow horns left outside the stockyard. Surprised to see the horns discarded he decided to try and repurpose them somehow and create jobs and stimulate economic growth in the area.
Each pair of Ankole horns has a distinct shape and coloring just like the animals they come from. Every horn needs to be dried, extensively cleaned, cut, sanded, and polished with a non-toxic wax by local people in Uganda. This process takes between 3 to 4 months before the piece is ready to be sold for use in the home. To manipulate the shape of the horn, it is submerged in boiling natural oil from local shea butter to make it soft and malleable. The piece of horn is then pressed into a weighty mould to create a beautiful, functional bowl or tray. Hand wash only.
